How many different structures can you think off? there are natural structures like caves, skeletons and trees. And there are also artificial structures like house, bridges and space rockets. These structures have very different shapes, but the all either enclose, span or support other things.

A whole structure like a tree or an aeroplane may appear to be very complicated structures are made up from smaller parts which are usually much more simple. In fact, most structures can be made from just five important and very simple shapes. These are sheets, cylinders, cubes, spheres and cones.

All around us are structures, natural and artificial. Take a look at some examples.

Many animals make nests or places in which to live. Birds makes nest where they lay eggs and raise their young. Earthworms and badgers dig burrows down into the ground. Some animals, like snails and shellfish, grow shells around themselves, to protect their soft bodies from predators.
